Thai resident Kwon Young-jun’s feat has been captured on video and circulated online amid other indelible images of the earthquake in the Thai capital, such as those of a building collapsing into rubble and water spilling out of rooftop infinity pools. He was exercising on the 52nd floor of one of three blocks at the Park Origin condominium in Thonglor when the earthquake struck, said his wife, an online personality and entrepreneur known as Ms Bowyuri, on March 30. She and their daughter were in their residence on the 30th floor in a neighbouring block. All three buildings in the condominium complex are connected by sky bridges, which appeared to have been damaged by the quake with debris falling to the ground. As the buildings swayed visibly, Mr Kwon leaped across a falling sky bridge to get to the other building to look for his family. After he realised that they had already evacuated the block, he walked down more than 40 floors to reunite with his wife and one year old daughter outside the building, Ms Bowyuri said. “It’s very dangerous. When I saw the clip, I was shocked like everyone else,” said the Thai beauty and skincare products entrepreneur on Facebook, who has more than 1.3 million followers online. “The events that day happened so fast. No one was at their most mindful... Oppa just wanted to help the family... When Oppa told the story, it wasn’t this scary because he didn’t turn around to look,” she added, using the Korean term for big brother to refer to her husband and business partner. Fortunately, Mr Kwon was largely unscathed, suffering just minor scratches. “At the time, I was just worried about my child, I had to go and take care of my wife and child,” he told Thairath TV, adding that he had never experienced an earthquake like this in South Korea. “At first, the concrete wasn’t separated yet,” he said in Korean, ably translated by his wife. He added that he only heard a loud bang after he had crossed over, but he just kept running without looking back, thinking only of reaching his family. The condominium’s developer Origin has said that the Park Origin building remains safe after checks were conducted. The structure of the connecting bridge is also still strong, and that it is designed to be attached to only one building, with the connecting part to the other building able to move in event of earthquakes. Mr Kwon and his family have temporarily moved to another district in Bangkok to live with Ms Bowyuri’s parents. Sharing clips of the family eating grilled pork and som tam, among other home-cooked dishes, she told her online followers that they were safe, after Bangkok experienced at least a dozen aftershocks linked to the 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar. “Oppa always thinks about his family first no matter what he does, to the point where he forgets that crossing over to another building is very dangerous,” Ms Bowyuri said. “I did not choose the wrong person.” Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
