The woman, surnamed Koh, had applied for a RM3,000 (S$910) loan online. Instead of receiving help, she was thrust into a terrifying spiral of extortion, harassment, and shame.

Woman lost her job, had to pay car loan
Speaking to reporters at a press conference on Tuesday (13 May), Ms Koh explained that she had recently lost her job as a secretary in Kuala Lumpur.

With her finances in ruins and her car five months behind on loan repayments, the vehicle was eventually repossessed, reports China Press.

Afraid to worry her parents, she turned to a loan advertisement she found on social media, not knowing it was a scam.

After reaching out to the supposed lender, she was redirected to WhatsApp, where she was instructed to fill in personal details and pay a RM1,000 (S$303) “processing fee”.

Confused about why she had to pay to borrow money, she questioned the request, but the scammers insisted there was no other way to access the loan.

Out of options, Koh borrowed from a friend and transferred the fee in two instalments. But the scammers rejected it, claiming the full amount must be paid in one go.

“But I really had no money to pay, so the loan shark asked me for nude photos,” she recounted.

In a desperate attempt to get the loan approved, Ms Koh complied, sending a photo of her naked upper body. But that wasn’t the end.

The 47-year-old female convenience store clerk had no money to get married, so she borrowed money from a loan shark, but was asked to pay a handling fee of $20,000. She took a risk and used the e-wallet terminal system in the convenience store to top up the loan shark's e-wallet with $11,000.

The bride-to-be, Saniah Bte Mohd Khalid, 47, pleaded guilty to one charge of theft and one charge of violating the Computer Misuse Act on Tuesday (May 13).

At the time of the incident, she was a clerk at the convenience store at Block 331, Serangoon Avenue 3, and her duties included providing customers with e-wallet (Singtel Dash) account top-up services.

Generally speaking, after the customer pays, the convenience store employee tops up the e-wallet through the point-of-sale terminal system and pays the corresponding amount to Singtel every week.

Before May 26 last year, the defendant tried to borrow money from a loan shark for the wedding expenses, but the other party asked her to pay a handling fee of $20,000 before the loan could be granted.

Recharge the e-wallet for the loan shark

The loan shark then instructed her to recharge the e-wallet in the phone number he provided to meet part of the handling fee. To this end, the defendant performed 22 unauthorized recharge services on the 26th and 27th of the same month, recharging a total of 11,000 yuan.

Six of the transactions were recharged by the defendant instructing her colleagues to help in the evening of the 27th, and said that these transactions would be settled afterwards. Since the defendant had the right to use the recharge system, her colleagues did not think much and followed her instructions.

The prosecution pointed out that the defendant had also defaulted on the payment when she worked for another employer in 2020 and was fined 4,000 yuan.

Sentenced to 10 months in prison

The prosecution pointed out that the defendant committed the crime for personal gain and also harmed an innocent colleague, and asked the judge to punish her severely and sentence her to five to seven months in prison.

When the lawyer pleaded for leniency, he said that the defendant had resorted to such a desperate measure due to financial constraints. She regretted it very much afterwards and expressed her willingness to plead guilty at the first time. Now she is going to jail. The defendant also promised that this was her last crime and hoped to let go of the past.

When sentencing, the judge pointed out that the defendant had not made any compensation and had a criminal record, and finally sentenced her to 10 months in prison.

案发时，她是位于实龙岗3道第331座组屋便利店的店员，职责包括为顾客提供电子钱包（Singtel Dash）户头的充值服务。

一般而言，顾客付费后，便利店员工通过销售点终端系统为电子钱包充值，并每周向新电信支付相应款项。

去年5月26日之前，被告为了结婚费用，试图向阿窿借钱，但对方要求她先支付2万元的手续费才能贷款。

随后，阿窿指示她为他提供的电话号码里的电子钱包充值，以满足部分手续费。为此，被告在同月26日和27日进行22次未经授权的充值服务，总共充值了1万1000元。

其中的六次交易是被告在27日傍晚发短信指示同事帮忙进行的充值，并称这些交易事后会被核算。由于被告有权使用充值系统，因此同事没有多想，按照她的指示行事。

控方指出，被告在2020年为另一雇主工作时也曾失信款项，被判罚款4000元。

判监10月
控方指，被告是为了个人利益犯案，还殃及一名无辜的同事，要求法官严惩，判她五个月到七个月监禁。

代表律师求情时说，被告因经济拮据才会出此下策，事后非常后悔，在第一时间表示要认罪，如今要入狱，被告也承诺这是她最后一次犯案，希望之后能够放下过去。

法官下判时指出，被告没有进行任何赔偿，也有案底，最终判她入狱10个月。
